Awards & Stipends
Each year, WM offers our members the opportunity to receive stipends, awards, and a WM Fellowship. The goal is to enhance practitioners’ skills and promote dietitians in the field of weight management. The following information gives a brief overview of these WM member benefit offerings. WM Fellowship:
The WM Fellowship supports the professional development of one RD to engage in a service learning project that promotes healthy lifestyle changes in the population.
- The project objective includes creating a tangible product, program, or outcome that furthers weight management and the RD’s ability to effectively promote healthy lifestyle changes in a population.
- The RD will work with a mentor from the WM practice group to help guide them, if needed, in the design, implementation, or publication of the project.
- The Fellowship is designed to be a year-long project that is expected to take approximately 15% of a registered dietitian’s professional time. A stipend of $10,000 will be provided.
Stipends:
Professional development stipends of $500 – $1,000 each will be awarded for attendance at:
- Academy Food & Nutrition Conference & Expo (FNCE)
- Weight Management Certificate of Training Programs
- Weight Management Annual Symposium
- Academy Public Policy Workshop
- American Society for Metabolic & Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS)
- The Obesity Society Annual Scientific Meeting (TOS)
- Kids Eat Right Volunteer Stipend ($100 Each)

Awards:
As a benefit to our members, we offer TWO $5,000 Awards that honor excellence and achievement in the field of weight management. The recipient of either the “Excellence in Practice” or “Excellence in Research” will receive a $5,000 check and complimentarty registration to the Symposium. The Award recipients must be willing to attend the Annual WM Symposium held each spring. The recipent will be responsible for their own travel and hotel expenses.

Excellence in Weight Management Practice Award
Purpose: To recognize individuals who have demonstrated excellence of practice in the area of weight management. Qualifications include exceptional performance in weight management practice, contributions to the advancement of weight management practice and leadership in weight management or dietetics-related organizations.
Excellence in Weight Management Outcomes Research Award
Purpose: To encourage outcomes research by WM members and to promote recognition of this research internally within the WM Dietetic Practice Group and the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, and externally in the diverse scientific societies that address obesity and weight management.
