Anne Mathews

Anne Mathews is a Research Assistant Scientist in the Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition, at the University of Florida. She teaches Nutrition and Disease to upper level undergraduate nutritional science majors and conducts research related to weight management. Specifically, Anne’s research interests include the prevention and treatment of overweight, obesity, and type 2 diabetes through behavioral and lifestyle approaches. She is currently a co-investigator for multiple research projects aimed at promoting healthy lifestyle changes in underserved, rural areas throughout Florida. These projects include family based programs for children and caregivers as well as older adults.

Prior to joining the faculty at UF, Anne was a research dietitian in the Department of Endocrinology at the University of Pittsburgh. In Pittsburgh, Anne served as an interventionist for 6 years with Look AHEAD study, an ongoing NIH funded multi-center trial to evaluate the effects of intentional weight loss and increased physical activity on cardiovascular outcomes in older adults with type 2 diabetes. While at Pitt, Anne also earned her doctorate in Health and Physical Activity, where she examined the effects of aerobic endurance training on fatty acid metabolism in overweight adults with and without type 2 diabetes. She also holds a MS in Foods and Nutrition from the University of Georgia and a BS in Public Health Nutrition from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill.

Prior to being chair-elect, Anne served as the treasurer for the WM DPG from 2006-2008 and served on the 2009 WM DCE symposium planning committee.
